Tram Tau – A Ride to the Hot Springs

Tram Tau

Only recently developed as a tourist destination, Tram Tau is not a particularly large or spectacular place, but it has its own unique charm.

Located 240 kilometers from Hanoi in a fairly isolated highland area, the nearest major town is Nghia Lo, just over an hour away by winding mountain roads. This peaceful region has the simple beauty of mountains, forests, and rice fields, and is home to ethnic minority communities such as the Hmong, Dao, and Thai.

In recent years, Tram Tau has become a familiar destination for Vietnam’s hiking community, mainly because of Ta Chi Nhu. Standing at 2,979 meters above sea level, Ta Chi Nhu is the seventh-highest mountain in Vietnam and a must-visit destination for people who love exploring the country’s mountains.

Tram Tau has another wonderful natural attraction: hot springs. This is something that many bikers especially enjoy during motorbike tours in North Vietnam. Imagine spending a full day of full-throttle riding, then arriving at a charming little homestay, enjoying some delicious local mountain food, and soaking in a steaming hot spring. Sounds like a vacation, doesn’t it?

In Tram Tau, you can immerse yourself in peaceful nature, stay with local families at a homestay, and slow down after stressful days at work. The roads leading to Tram Tau are also spectacular, making the journey itself a rewarding experience for any biker.

When is the best time to visit Tram Tau?

The best time to visit Tram Tau is around September and October, when the summer rains have eased and the rice begins to turn golden across the endless terraced fields. The dry weather is also ideal for hiking tours and off-road motorbike tours.
