Phong Nha – Ke Bang is a national park in Vietnam, located in Quang Tri Province, about 500 km south of Hanoi. The park covers around 201,000 hectares of limestone mountains and is one of the most remarkable natural areas in Vietnam. Phong Nha – Ke Bang has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site twice, in 2003 and 2015, based on two different criteria: geological and geomorphological values, and ecosystem and biodiversity values.
Formed through geological processes that began more than 400 million years ago, Phong Nha – Ke Bang is characterized by its spectacular limestone formations, with more than 300 caves, underground rivers, and a rich variety of rare plants and animals listed in both Vietnam’s and the world’s Red Data Books.

Among the most famous attractions are Phong Nha Cave and Son Doong Cave.
Phong Nha Cave
Phong Nha Cave stretches for around 7,729 meters and contains an underground river system extending for more than 13 km. It is one of the most accessible and popular attractions in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.
Before entering the cave, visitors take a boat trip of around one hour along the underground river. Once inside, the boat engine is turned off and the boatman continues by rowing, allowing visitors to quietly enjoy the impressive stalactites and stalagmites in the cave.

Part of the cave is also a dry section where visitors can leave the boat and explore on foot.
Son Doong Cave
Located in the core zone of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Son Doong Cave was discovered by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1990. In 2009, it was officially recognized as the world’s largest cave by volume.
With an estimated volume of around 38.5 million cubic meters, Son Doong is several times larger than Deer Cave in Malaysia, which had previously been considered the world’s largest cave.

The cave’s ecosystem remains remarkably well preserved, partly because access is strictly controlled. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed to enter each year.
Many people who have explored Son Doong describe the experience as feeling like stepping into another world.
