Located about 150 km from Hanoi in Thanh Hoa Province, Pu Luong Nature Reserve has become an increasingly popular destination for both domestic and international travelers. Covering an area of around 17,000 hectares, Pu Luong is home to thousands of species of plants and animals and is one of Vietnam’s important protected natural areas.

Around 10,000 people live in this area, their main livelihoods are farming and livestock raising, with rice, bamboo, and several other crops. When I first visited in 2017, tourism was still relatively undeveloped. Today, many homestays and resorts have appeared in this peaceful mountain region.

So, what has made Pu Luong so attractive to travelers?
Beautiful scenery
As a nature reserve, Pu Luong has a very high level of forest coverage, including well-preserved areas of primary forest. It is an attractive destination for people looking to get closer to nature. Trekking through the forests is also one of the most popular activities here.
Pu Luong is also known for its rice terraces. They may not be as famous or as extensive as the terraces of Mu Cang Chai, but the landscapes here are still beautiful, with rice fields stretching across the mountain valleys.

Ethnic minority culture
Pu Luong is mainly home to the Thai and Muong ethnic groups, who have lived in the area for generations. They have their own traditions and a slower, more peaceful way of life that remains closely connected to the surrounding mountains and forests.

Staying at a Thai or Muong homestay surrounded by lush green landscapes, sharing a meal with a local family, and trying traditional dishes such as pickled bamboo shoots and bamboo-cooked sticky rice is undoubtedly one of the best ways to experience Pu Luong.
