Ma Pi Leng is a mountain pass around 20 km long, located between the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac on the Ha Giang Loop. At an elevation of around 1,200–1,400 meters above sea level, it is one of the most beautiful mountain passes in northern Vietnam.
The road may not be very long, but its winding curves and spectacular scenery feel almost mythical. Endless limestone mountains, the deep green waters of the Nho Que River, and the corn fields of the Hmong people come together to create an incredible natural landscape. The author of this article sometimes jokes that if Vietnam had snow, The Lord of the Rings could have been filmed in Ma Pi Leng and Ha Giang.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Ma Pi Leng Pass also carries memories of an important period in the history of Northeast Vietnam. Before 1963, this road did not exist. Local people traveling between Dong Van and Meo Vac had to use narrow trails along steep cliffs, which were only suitable for walking. It took workers two years to open the route under dangerous and difficult conditions. In the beginning, it was only a narrow path wide enough for people and pack horses. After several expansions over the years, it eventually became the road we see today.
Ma Pi Leng has long been known in Vietnam as one of the must-visit roads for travelers in general and bikers in particular. Since the Ha Giang Loop went viral around the world in recent years, it has become even more famous.
Riding through Ma Pi Leng is an experience difficult to compare with anything else. The pass is not particularly long, but the scenery is truly breathtaking: endless mountains and corn fields that may look fragile, yet remain resilient, much like the local Hmong people who have lived here for generations.
