I’ve been guiding motorbike tours for years and have been to Ha Giang many times, so I truly understand why, in recent years, it has become so famous worldwide—simply because it’s breathtakingly beautiful! Jokingly, I’ve worn out several pairs of tires on the roads here, but every time I return, I’m blown away by the wild, majestic beauty of this land, laced with a subtle, melancholic charm. Anyone who has ever set foot here might never forget the breathtaking beauty of Ma Pi Leng Pass, Tham Ma Slope and other places in Ha Giang.
Perhaps the only odd thing is that it took so long for Ha Giang to become widely known. But no matter—everything has its time. Thanks to Instagram, Facebook, and young content creators, Ha Giang has now become a must-visit destination for anyone who loves adventure and exploration.
The most beautiful and awe-inspiring part of this province is the highland region that spans the four districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac—better known as the “Dong Van Karst Plateau.” Stretching across elevations from 1,000 to 1,600 meters above sea level, this majestic plateau is not only renowned for its landscapes but also holds great scientific and historical value. It has become a familiar destination for geologists, archaeologists, and biologists from around the world.
Ha Giang is not only a land of beautiful scenery. It also has a turbulent history, from the centuries-long migration of the H’mong people to conflicts with the French colonial authorities in the early 20th century.
A large part of Ha Giang was once a self-governed territory of the Hmong, where they had their own land and maintained their own militia. The French had control over Vietnam at the time, but the difficult terrain and strong resistance of the Hmong under the leadership of the “Hmong King,” Vuong Chinh Duc, meant they were unable to fully control this region.
The French eventually chose to reach a compromise and began trading with the Hmong, particularly in opium. It was not until 1945 that the Hmong King gave up his power and accepted a position in the new government. The Hmong “kingdom” then faded into history.
For bikers in particular, Ha Giang offers hundreds of kilometers of winding mountain passes with scenery that takes your breath away, along with off-road trails that challenge our riding skills. This land also gives us the opportunity to meet Hmong ethnic minority people living in remote villages deep in the mountains—where we can witness the incredible resilience of people born in a place where rocks are more plentiful than soil.
